Fury as council brands householders ‘wasters’ with ‘derogatory’ emoji stickers left on wheelie bins

Dozens of residents have been left feeling ‘insulted’ after a council labelled them ‘wasters’ with ‘derogatory’ stickers put on their bins. Black wheelie bins in some neighbourhoods of Peterborough have had a red sad face emoji sticker attached to them as part of a recycling campaign supported by the council. However people have been left furious after it was discovered that the stickers, intended ‘to help communities think twice about what they could recycle’ aren’t actually recyclable themselves, reports the Peterborough Telegraph. The stickers are intended ‘to help communities think twice about what they could recycle’ but are not actually recyclable themselves  Bins in the Orton Malborne and Sugar Way areas are part of a trial of 7,000 homes where waste recycling levels will be monitored over six months. More positive green stickers, which feature a smiling emoji and the word ‘recycler’, are due to be sent out next week but because of an ‘operational issue’ the red ones were used first. The scheme is part of a campaign by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and while itR...

As it is heated in a 900+-degree-C furnace, hot stamp blank material becomes very sticky, resulting in friction coefficients of 40 percent or more. Material coatings used to prevent decarburization and scale formation during blank heating can be very abrasive to tool surfaces. No lubricants can be used because of the ultrahigh temperatures. As a result, managing friction is critical to avoid excessive thinning, splitting, and cracking in the part, as well as excessive die wear from the abrasion. Several methods are used to control friction. The part may be crash-formed without pressure pads when part geometry allows the free flow of material into the die cavity during forming. This is possible if there is not too much surface contact between the blank and die. However, other methods are needed to control the part during forming to prevent its unintended lateral shifting, which would create the need for extra material addenda and post-forming trimming. Edge or pin gauges commonly are used to locate the blank during die loading. Stick pads may be used to grip or form the material in the center of the part. This is the opposite of most large cold stamping operations during which dr...

Allbirds sneakers are more popular than ever. The brand claims to make the “world’s most comfortable

Allbirds sneakers are more popular than ever. The brand claims to make the “world’s most comfortable shoe” without actually looking like a comfort shoe. The shoes have long been a reader and editor favorite at Good Housekeeping for both wearing and gifting — the brand features basic designs that you can wear everywhere, and a unique construction that makes them feel super comfy. Still, the brand makes a lot of bold claims about everything from comfort to sustainability to ease of use (no socks needed and machine-washable?). We couldn’t wait to put them to the test in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab. Our team of fiber scientists reviews fabric-based products of all kinds, from clothing and footwear to home furnishings like sheets and towels. Our Lab experts evaluated Allbirds firsthand and wash-tested multiple pairs in the Lab. We also surveyed our panel to see what dozens of real users think of all of the brand’s styles. RHB in Malaysia is introducing fraud protection cards with mini screens on the back that auto-generate

RHB in Malaysia is introducing fraud protection cards with mini screens on the back that auto-generate new card verification value (CVV) numbers, according to reports. An algorithm will generate the new number for the card. The RHB Rewards Motion Code, as the bank calls the new offering, offers an alternative to standard cards with a static CVV code that only changes when the card is replaced. A study done by Bank Negara Malaysia showed that upwards of 92 percent of total fraud losses were connected to card payment fraud. Also, most of it was done when the card wasn’t even present, with either stolen PIN numbers or CVV codes. “RHB is proud to be at the forefront of fraud prevention in Malaysia,” said Nazri Othman, acting head of group retail banking at RHB Banking Group. “In our efforts to curb fraud, we continue to pursue innovation in line with our aspirations to be a digital-centric bank by 2022. By partnering with Visa and IDEMIA, we have been able to leverage on best-in-class security features to safeguard our customers’ financial resources. This card provides a complete end-to-end solution for RHB as an issuer and for our cardholders.”  The bank wants to issue the new RHB ...

The good vibes of the festival are sure to continue this year regardless but the current climate demands that organizers of such large public gatherings implement these extra measures. “No alcohol will be for sale in the park, however, alcohol is allowed as per park rules: no hard alcohol or glass is allowed; beer and wine in non-glass containers ONLY. Any hard alcohol brought to the gathering will be confiscated by SFPD and violators may be subject to fine.” There will be only four entry locations: JFK Drive and Transverse Drive, Fulton Street and 30th Avenue, JFK Drive and 36th Avenue and South Polo Field. We get it, press releases are full of hyperbole. Cerebras recently announced they’ve built the largest

We get it, press releases are full of hyperbole. Cerebras recently announced they’ve built the largest chip ever. The chip has 400,000 cores and contains 1.2 trillion transistors on a die over 46,000 square mm in area. That’s roughly the same as a square about 8.5 inches on each side. But honestly, the WSE — Wafer Scale Engine — is just most of a wafer not cut up. Typically a wafer will have lots of copies of a device on it and it gets split into pieces. According to the company, the WSE is 56 times larger than the largest GPU on the market. The chip boasts 18 gigabytes of storage spread around the massive die. The problem isn’t making such a beast — although a normal wafer is allowed to have a certain number of bad spots. The real problems come through things such as interconnections and thermal management. The white paper is detailed while still managing to be a bit fuzzy. In addition to somehow solving the interconnect, packaging and thermal problems with using a whole wafer, the architecture of the cores is supposed to be amenable to sparse matrices and the specific types of algorithms necessary for deep learning. There’s no word as yet on cost or specific availability, but...

T-Drill’s portable T-65 SS performs stainless steel branching

T-Drill has introduced the T-65 SS portable unit for making T-joints of 17 to 54 mm OD in main run tubes up to 300 mm. It eliminates cutting of pipe, two welded joints, fitting cost, tube polishing at welding points, and inspection costs, says the company. The branch pipe can be connected to a formed outlet by orbital or manual welding. The machine has two handles: one for drilling through and the other one for pilot hole side movement. This minimizes the amount of force needed to drill through the steel. Pilot hole adjustment and tool changing have been simplified. To switch from one tool to another, the user tilts the machine, without holding the weight of the machine at any point. TRP announces DH7 groupset, with more options to follow

TRP has a brand-new 7-speed, downhill-specific derailleur and shifter, the DH7, and there are heavy hints that wider-ranging groupsets will appear in the not too distant future. For a couple of years now, Aaron Gwin’s bike has been decked out with a groupset seen little elsewhere, and certainly without ‘big S” logos etched on to the cage. We’ve known for a while that it was made by TRP (Tektro’s performance-level brake company) and, at Eurobike, a working, production-ready set of components were there and waiting to be fondled. Hall has helped design the mech to be as quiet as possible, a requirement (Gwin even races with earplugs in, apparently), with the so-called ‘Hall Lock’ being key to this. From the sound of it, TRP is investing heavily in this project, with very strong hints that more will follow shortly. We believe that it’s opened a new production line just for this product. The Hall Lock is a lever in the mech’s body that locks the position of the B-knuckle (the bit that you screw into the derailleur hanger). By locking it in position, rather than it being spring-loaded, the derailleur is said to move back and forwards less, creating less noise over rough terrain. Were...
