You’ve probably noticed “paraffin manicure” on your nail salon’s menu, and you’ve also probably wondered what the heck paraffin was. If that sounds like you, then you’ve come to the right place. We’ve broken down everything you need to know about this softening, smoothing treatment, including tips on how to do one yourself at home. It’s a manicure that includes paraffin wax—a colorless, odorless wax derived from beeswax and petroleum. The nail technician dips your hands into the heated wax (or uses a brush to paint the wax onto the skin) until they’re covered in several layers. Once your hands are waxified, a plastic glove is placed over them and wrapped in hot towels to boost the treatment’s benefits. The wax is often mixed with essential oils like lavender, tea tree, peppermint or aloe vera to double the benefits in the process and give it a soothing scent.  Once cooled, the technician works to peel the wax away and provide the standard manicure (including cleaning, shaping and buffing the nails before applying nail polish). They also play close attention to trimming the cuticles and massaging your hands with rich lotion to lock in the extra hydration and softness. Paraffin ma...

Kraft Heinz promotes cheese slices with tamper resistant NFC tags • NFCW inc NFC World

PARTNER NEWS: Food giant Kraft Heinz is using tamper resistant NXP NFC tags for an innovative marketing campaign that lets customers tap their NFC phone to a tag incorporated into product packaging for a chance to win a gift card — but only if they have first purchased the product and opened the packet. Tamper resistant NFC tags are typically used to provide proof to consumers and supply chain participants that a product has not been opened before it reaches them. The Kraft campaign turns this concept on its head, however, as consumers are instead only able to enter the competition once the product has been opened. Kraft Heinz worked with TPG Rewards on the intelligent Instantly Redeemable Coupon (IRC) project, using NXP NTAG 213 TagTamper tags. “There is a small conductive loop inside the NTAG 213 TagTamper that indicates package open/closed status,” NXP’s Tim Daly explains. “On startup, the tag checks the loop. A closed loop indicates the package seal is intact, while an open loop indicates that the package’s seal has been broken and the product may have been interfered with. “If the tag detects an open loop, it records the status in memory and reports it whenever the tag is ...

Honolulu LED street light conversion to drastically reduce energy usage while brightening neighborhoods

A city of Honolulu program that has converted approximately 53,000 street lights to LED lamps is almost complete according to city officials. The public-private project teamed with Johnson Controls at the cost of $46.6 million including construction, financing warranty, and networking over 10 years. “We thought it would be about 40%, but we found out it’s a 60% energy savings which means it’s nearly 17 million kilowatt-hours of electricity that’s being saved every year and that’s the equivalent of electric consumption of 2,800 homes on Oahu.” Estimates have the savings from the decreased electric use at $5 million per year. LED bulbs also have a life span of an estimated 20-30 years. The former street light bulbs only lasted 2-3 years. The City says that taxpayer money will be also be saved from maintenance. “LED lighting is more energy-efficient, makes our streets safer, and this new infrastructure allows us to better direct light so we are not disturbing wildlife like shearwaters. This is an example of a public-private partnership that really works.” Mayor Caldwell added. Caldwell was presented a check today at a press conference from Hawaii Energy with a rebate of $1,922,002....

It’s so hot in parts of the U.S. forecasters were able to bake biscuits in a car

Forecasters at the federal agency in Omaha, Neb., took to Twitter Friday to document their baking exploits. Agency staff put four uncooked biscuits on a baking tray and left them on the dashboard of a parked car. “If you are wondering if it’s going to be hot today, we are attempting to bake biscuits using only the sun and a car in our parking lot,” NWS Omaha tweeted. Forty-five minutes in, the biscuits were rising and after an hour the baking pan had reached 175 degrees Fahrenheit (79 C), while the tops of the biscuits were a toasty 153 (67 C). “Look before you lock! On average 38 children die in hot cars each year. Don’t be a statistic!,” NWS Omaha tweeted. At the five hour mark, after turning the car to adjust for the angle of the sun, the NWS reported that the “top of the biscuits are baked but the bottom remains doughy.” At the same time, the back seat temperature in the shade had hit 144 (62 C). “And after nearly eight hours in the sun, the outside of the biscuit is actually edible,” NWS Omaha tweeted in its final update. The NWS has warned of hot weather for a large swath of the U.S. this weekend, including dangerously high temperatures across the East and Mid...

RPT-INSIGHT-Plastic bottles vs aluminium cans: who’ll win the global water fight?

LONDON, Oct 17 (Reuters) – Global bottled water giants are ramping up trials of easily recyclable aluminium cans to replace plastic that pollutes the world’s seas. Sound like a slam-dunk for the environment? Not entirely. Aluminium cans might indeed mean less ocean waste, but they come with their own eco-price: the production of each can pumps about twice as much carbon into the atmosphere as each plastic bottle. French group Danone has become the latest company to make a move, telling Reuters it had started to replace some plastic bottles with aluminium cans for local water brands in Britain, Poland and Denmark. The shift, previously unannounced, comes as multinational rivals like Coca-Cola Co, PepsiCo and Nestle are also launching some canned versions of water brands. The beverage industry has been scrambling to react to public anger over scenes of huge piles of plastic waste contaminating oceans, pledging to step up recycling efforts. However it’s not black and white on the green front. By increasing recycling via cans, companies could fall back in efforts to reduce their carbon footprints, illustrating the tough juggling act they can face to keep environmentally consci...
