338 pumps along Metro-3 route to prevent flooding in Mumbai – mumbai news

Other cities – Noida, Gurgaon, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Bhopal , Chandigarh , Dehradun, Indore, Jaipur, Lucknow, Patna, Ranchi The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) has begun preparations to ensure a hassle-free monsoon for citizens. It recently installed 338 dewatering pumps across 27 spots where work on the underground Metro-3 (Colaba-Bandra-Seepz) corridor is underway. Last week, MMRCL and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) undertook a joint inspection of five stations along the line. “Work on all storm water drains and sewer lines that were to be diverted or relocated is complete. We have set up a disaster management unit,” said SK Gupta, director (projects), MMRCL. Kiran Dighavkar, assistant municipal commissioner of A ward (which includes Fort and CSMT area), said, “We have asked MMRCL to increase the capacity of sedimentation tanks and augment the storm water drains. We also undertook pest control in certain areas.” Citizens had raised concerns that work on the corridor – which is being undertaken in seven packages, from south Mumbai to Seepz in the western suburbs – may lead to water logging during monsoon. In 2018, BMC had identified 17 spots where...

Like most cities around the world, Singapore is short on land. But with rising awareness over

Like most cities around the world, Singapore is short on land. But with rising awareness over the need to address climate change, the country finds itself facing a daunting new challenge in slashing its carbon emissions. Measuring just 721 square kilometers, Singapore is half the size of metropolitan London, and is densely populated to boot (with a population of 5.6 million compared with London’s nine million). This appears to be an insurmountable problem for the space-constrained country. However, the combination of a concerted masterplan by the government to embrace solar energy, an audacious commercial project to pipe in renewable energy from Australia, and the ingenious application of technology to reduce energy use in data centers may just help Singapore chart its way forward as a green data center hub. According to a biennial report submitted by the Singapore government last year, the country generated more than 50.9 million tons of greenhouse gases in 2014. Under the 2015 Paris Agreement, Singapore agreed to cut emissions intensity from 2005 levels by 36 percent, to be achieved by 2030. Absolute emissions will continue to increase though, under an exemption under co...

Get access to essential strategic content, in-depth reports, industry intelligence, and exclusive data. Like most shoppers, I did a little previewing before Black Friday, and I was able to get some good deals (at least I think so). Like 66% of shoppers, I wanted to check for sales and specials without having to venture into the stores during this crazy time. They were abundant, and I was going to capitalize on them. Kohl’s always has a deal, and they did not disappoint when visiting their homepage. Just before the holidays, shoppers were able to get 15% off across the board. Additionally, it’s always an added benefit that shoppers receive $15 Kohl’s cash for every $50 spent. This was a great opportunity to replenish some household items along with checking two items off my niece’s wish list. The holidays would not be complete without making at least one or two purchases at Amazon. I was in good company based on what we learned from the 1,055 shoppers we surveyed in our November 2019 Digital Commerce 360/Bizrate Insights research. 40% of shoppers intend to make half or more of their online holiday gift purchases at Amazon and 66% will make ¼ of their purchases at Amazon. Most sho...

Painting 101: Choosing The Correct Automotive Primer And Sealer

Thanks to the availability of Internet information, anyone who has ever sprayed a coat of paint can post their expertise online. This has led to a lot of bad or outdated information. People toss around terms like primer, sealer, two-part paint, tri-coat, lacquer, single-stage, and it can get confusing. Let’s start by dispelling one of the most common misconceptions. Many clients ask their painters to use lacquer. They think they will get a better paint job by using lacquer. This is not true. Ever see a classic car with a paint surface covered in tiny cracks? That’s because it was painted with lacquer. Unless you’re painting a 100-point concours restoration, you shouldn’t be using lacquer. Modern paint is easier to use, looks better, and is much more durable that any lacquer paintjob. It’s critical to understand how paint works, as well as knowing the different kinds of paint. New-technology paint works differently than old lacquer. Lacquer was made with very strong solvents. While this allowed solvents to reach deep into the surface to form a strong chemical bond, it also created a variety of serious problems like crazing and wrinkling. This meant when something when wrong, you ...

When reading about cool projects and products, it’s common to see wiring plugs labelled “JST connector.”

When reading about cool projects and products, it’s common to see wiring plugs labelled “JST connector.” This looks fine until we start getting hands-on and begin hacking things together. Inevitably we find the JST connector from one part fails to fit in the JST connector of another. This is the moment we learn “JST” is not a connector specification. It is short for Japan Solderless Terminals Manufacturing Company, Ltd. A company whose history goes back to 1957 and their website (styled in 1999) lists hundreds of different types. We can simplify to “JST connector” when chit-chatting about projects. But when it comes to actual hardware specification, that’s not good enough. Which JST connector? The reality is: we live in a world full of ambiguous connector specifications. We also sometimes choose to ignore “No User Serviceable Parts Inside” and merrily explore guts of equipment to which we have no specifications at all. As hackers, we need some skill at deciphering mystery connectors. We’ll start here with a quick survey of the most popular types from JST. A simple two pin wire-to-wire connector is probably the RCY series. When a connector interface two or more wires to a circuit...

One-of-a-Kind 3D Full Body Imaging Technology – EOS

LONG BEACH, Calif., Oct. 28, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach is now the only children’s hospital from the South Bay to Orange County to offer the EOS Imaging System, the first technology capable of providing full-body, 2D and 3D images of pediatric patients in a standing position at a low dose of radiation. EOS is a device that captures bi-planar images with two perpendicular X-ray beams that travel vertically while scanning the patient from head to toe. In less than 20 seconds, the EOS exam produces simultaneous frontal and lateral, low dose images. The two resulting digital images are processed by EOS’ proprietary sterEOS® software to generate a 3D model of the patient’s spine and/or lower limbs. These detailed images with only 20 seconds of radiation were previously unachievable before EOS technology. The benefits of EOS include highly detailed information about the patient’s unique anatomy to better assist the orthopedic surgeons at Miller Children’s & Women’s as they diagnose patients. This additional data can be used for precise, 3D surgical planning to help improve overall patient outcomes by developing a customized...

Who decides the future of US retail cage-free eggs?

Haven’t the activists already won the battle over how U.S. hens will be housed? After all, just about every major retail and foodservice outlet and major food processors have pledged to only purchase cage-free eggs and egg products by some future date. But most U.S. consumers are still purchasing more economical cage-produced eggs at retail. Prior to the campaign to convince major egg buyers to make future cage-free egg purchase pledges, activists were able to get legislation passed in several states which addressed hen housing in a less-than-uniform manner. Washington and Oregon enacted standards that didn’t mandate cage-free but weren’t typical industry cage housing; they now have both passed legislation mandating that only cage-free eggs be sold in these states by the end of 2023. Chicken Defeathering Machine Michigan’s legislature passed a bill mandating cage-free housing in December 2018, but it was vetoed by the governor in January. This legislation was to replace a law that mandates hens be given 144 square inches per bird in any type of enclosure by April 1, 2020. Expect the industry and activists to make another push for cage-free legislation in Michigan. Massach...

3D bioprinting is the cutting edge of 3D printing as it joins engineered materials and living

3D bioprinting is the cutting edge of 3D printing as it joins engineered materials and living tissues into complex shapes. Many universities are private research firms are currently exploring paths to 3D printing bones, muscles, and organs. Some of those organizations build their own bioprinters either from scratch or by modifying an FDM (fused deposition modeling) 3D printer, but the researchers doing 3D bioprinting are usually some form of biologists, meaning they have to work with an engineering department/firm to construct their 3D printers. That can often delay projects and result in bioprinters that are just good enough to prove a concept but struggle with more demanding tasks. Turkish company AxolotlBiosystems provides a solution to those researchers by offering a highly-sensitive 3D bioprinter specifically designed for research. Their 3D bioprinters have been adopted by several universities so far, including Stanford University, Penn State University, Hacettepe, Marmara, Acıbadem, and İstinye universities. Founding partner Onur Samet Yıldırım relates a major obstacle of 3D bioprinting: “The main problem with the technology is the tissue death during the printing process....

Thieves Steal ‘priceless’ Jewel Sets From Dresden Museum

Berlin (AP) — Thieves broke into Dresden’s Green Vault, one of the world’s oldest museums, early Monday morning, making off with three “priceless” sets of 18th century jewelry that German officials said would be impossible to sell on the open market. The treasury of Augustus the Strong of Saxony was established in 1723 and today contains around 4,000 objects of gold, precious stones and other materials on display in Dresden’s Royal Palace. Authorities said it appeared the thieves had broken open only one glass case containing three sets of Baroque jewelry made up of dozens of gems each. “This is a bitter day for the cultural heritage of Saxony,” the state’s interior minister, Roland Woeller, told reporters. He said the thieves “stole cultural treasures of immeasurable worth — that is, not only the material worth but also the intangible worth to the state of Saxony, which is impossible to estimate.” Police said they have established a special investigation team, code-named ‘Epaulette’ and comprising 20 specialist officers, to solve the case. Museum officials said the sets that were stolen included intricate and dazzling brooches, buttons, buckles and other items. Green Vau...

Jim Sheridan to direct Native American drama ‘Murphy And The Indian’ (exclusive) | News

Six-time Oscar-nominated Irish director Jim Sheridan is writing and will direct Murphy And The Indian, the true story of Standing Bear, a Native American and civil rights leader who won a landmark 1879 legal case. Standing Bear argued in the historic case that Native Americans are “persons within the meaning of the law”. The Ponca Chief was recently honoured with a statue in the US Capitol. The project has received development financing of €22,500 from Screen Ireland in its latest round of funding decisions. Sheridan’s Hell’s Kitchen is producing the project and also received Screen Ireland backing for three further Sheridan projects.  The veteran filmmaker is also developing Sheriff Street, a drama set on the north inner city Dublin street where he grew up, which he will also direct. It tells the story of a boy who makes a deal with God that if his brother survives he will never sin again. Screen Ireland has backed the project with €33,713 in development funding. In Absentia, a long-gestating documentary written by Colm Quinn with Quinn and Sheridan co-directing, investigates the high-profile case of the murder of Sophie Toscan Du Plantier. The French national was found murder...
