When harnessing the incredible force of a laser cutter or engraver, one must come to accept that their creative capabilities are only as powerful as the laser itself. Combine a low-powered laser and a tiny engraving area, you can start to see why most desktop-sized machines don’t quite make the cut for hobbyists and prosumers.
You might need more industrial strength to actualize you engraving and cutting needs, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to pay an industrial price to achieve it. Similar to the desktop 3D printer market, there are a number of low-cost, Chinese-made laser cutting/engraving machines that have made the technology more accessible to all.
We recently took a look at the TEN-HIGH 40W, a laser engraver that has become popular on web-based retailers like Amazon and Ali Express. Now, we’ll kick things up a notch with the more powerful and robust member of the laser engraving family: the TEN-HIGH 60W.
Priced right around $3,000, the TEN-HIGH 60W is certainly not built for entry-level makers to toy around with. Instead, this school bus-yellow laser cutter seems more geared toward hardcore hobbyists and dedicated makers who want a machine capable of cutting through acrylic and wood material.
Compared to the popular TEN-HIGH 40W, the most notable difference between the two machines is highlighted right in the product name. The TEN-HIGH 60W has a more powerful laser source, improving overall performance and providing greater compatibility with various non-metal materials.
It also provides a large engraving area of 400 x 600mm, double the length of the 40W model. Of course, this increased power and size also comes at a higher cost. From what we’ve gathered, the TEN-HIGH 60W will cost you around $3,000 (give or take a few hundred).
According to the features listed on the Amazon product page, the TEN-HIGH 60W has recently been upgraded with a front-rear double door that eliminates size restrictions, enabling the use of objects with unlimited length. This machine is suitable with a number of organic, non-metal materials, including acrylic, plywood, leather, wood, glass, cloth, bamboo, paper, and more.
Those who want to add a rotary axis to the TEN-HIGH 60W laser engraver can utilize the pre-installed rotary axis interface and switch to simplify the installation process.
Other essential components include an effective ventilation fan for exhaust smoke, a display that showcases the cooling water temperature, a built-in electric left platform, one button control, as well as a red light positioning system.
There are some safety features integrated into the TEN-HIGH 60W, such as a blowing flame retardant system that prevents burning during the engraving process and a water shutoff protection valve that protects the laser tube from the laser. When the cover is opened while the machine is operating, the laser suspension protection system will stop the laser from emitting.
The TEN-HIGH 60W laser engraver is compatible with Windows 7 and newer. The manufacturer claims that the 32-bit system is the most stable, but 64-bit is also supported. Along with the engraver itself, plug-ins like CorelLASER & Seal Design Software LaserDRW are also included.
We haven’t had the opportunity to review the TEN-HIGH 60W ourselves, but we did gather feedback from what other users have experienced. Most of the Amazon reviews are positive, boasting about the ease of use and impressive engraving quality.
A few reviewers mentioned that they purchased a chiller to help use the laser for extended periods of time. One of those users also expressed difficulty using the optional rotary system, as the installation disc fails to demonstrate how to operate it.
Most of the negative reviews seem to revolve around the need to download third-party software (CorelDRAW). Otherwise, TEN-HIGH provides informative YouTube videos to assist with the assembly and engraving process, along with a responsive customer service team to help with troubleshooting issues.
There are a variety of samples you can check out alongside these reviews, most of which showcase the impressive abilities of the TEN-HIGH 60W. A few outlying reviews lament about obtaining poor quality engravings, particularly with wood materials, but most users appear to be mostly satisfied with the machine.
